Joy Buzzers (1991-94)

Joy Buzzers started out as a mutation of Echoes of God when that band went dark. It often included Ulrich Krieger on tenor sax when he was living in the U.S.

Whereas Echoes of God evolved into a compositional group, Joy Buzzers was largely strategy oriented. As with Echoes of God, it was an opportunity for me (and everyone) to blast a bit and get away from the more austere compositional knots I was otherwise engaged in at the time. As I once put it in a one-line program note, "Joy Buzzers was formed so that we could have some fun at the monastery".

My Bar Mitzvah haftorah reading arranged for improv group at John Zorn's Radical Jew Festival. Joy Buzzers renamed for the occasion. The performance also included video from my Bar Mitzvah reception at the Shelron Catering Hall - including footage of me sitting in with the band playing Louie Louie on my first electric guitar.
